  11. RESET – Review (SPOILERS)

What a ride that finished recently in the Thai BL Series “Reset”. Some known ideas and some rarely used and in some ways it gave me a retro feeling.

The series starts with the most dramatic bang, all things end. The biggest drama unfolds in the beginning, and that was a rare take for me, and makes the shows so interesting. It is about Second Chances. What do people do, if a bad outcome is reset? We think about Armin, Tada and their different choices. But in the end, we realized: this is a new chance for all involved characters. And… some fail miserably being the same bad people as before, while some change for the better.

Now what do you do, when you know your death and a love comes into your life you didn’t know you had before already? All this is played out so interesting, that the BL parts felt almost like an extra, and while I really liked the romantic and intimate moments, I was so taken by “what happens next with the drama”, which was an unusual and enjoyable aspect of the series.

One for thing for me was Tada, because he looks right out of a late-1990s Yaoi/BL Manga. His hair, his face, the bushy brows, the square cut suits. There was a 1990s Manga retro feeling for me, which I found surprising to see. I liked the concept of Armin knowing things that his soon to be lover Tada did not, and put all us older folks in a nostalgic time – and me personally in a time when I didn’t have the cynicism about internet and tech I have unfortunately now. Ah how we believed the world to be good in the 1990s. The End of History, the Internet bringing world peace.

I really liked the drama aspect here. It shows stronger to what dark depths humans are willing to go, if things don’t go their way, if they are not number one. It seems like a mirror to 2025 reality. The biggest surprise was Bom playing Thiwthit as a Joker-like villain, whom I had just a bit ago seen as the calm, naive tutor in “I will knock you”, showing what a vast acting range he truly has. And I liked it that actors were cast in truly different types. The drama was just as much as I liked and not too much to depress me. The BL develops naturally, and we get an honest glimpse on the snakepit the entertainment industry often can be, which is a merit in its own. The “rich and famous” had some 1980s TV series feel to me, like Dynasty or Dallas, a real vintage thing I liked to re-surface.

We got plenty different characters, each interesting in itself, plenty of locations and events, none felt too stretched out or far fetched. A mature love-story outside the high-school area for once, so all in all nothing to complain and a very good experience for me. I gave myself a few days to think before writing. I had not the feeling it was a super mega killer show, but I found nothing lacking or too much, nothing to criticize. As such I can confidently give it a

    10/10
